Thailand approved pilot study on covid-19 with Andrographis extract products
Androgrpahis paniculata herb or green chiretta, is a traditional herb medicine in Thailand with local name Fah Talai Jone. With the spreading of the covid-19 in this country, the andrographis herb made Thailand a new solution, they applied the andrographis to fight this situation.After test-tube experiments, phase 1 study, phase 2 study with 60 volunteers, the government of Thailand approved a pilot study on treatment of covid-19 with Andrographis extracts capsules in late December 2020.
Phase1 of the Thai research initiative on Andrographis paniculata capsules began in June 2020 at two hospitals with 12 volunteers. The volunteers were confirmed to be infected with COVID-19 and had mild to moderate symptoms within 72 hours. There, the volunteers received either 60 mg or 100 mg capsules of the extracts, three times per day. Results showed that the lower dose showed benefits, especially for coughing. Cough volume and overall symptom severity decreased significantly within three days. Other symptoms improved, and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were negative for the COVID-19 virus in two patients after five days. Real-time PCR tests were negative in all after two weeks. No side effects were found in this phase.
Phase2 started in September 2020 with 60 volunteers who were given either Andrographis or a placebo. The results of this phase are unclear as the country was hit by a second wave of Covid-19. In response to the emergency, the Department of Thai Traditional Medicine decided to go on the pilot study. Upon approval of the current pilot study, authorities claims that Andrographis can be introduced as a safe, effective, and less costly treatment to the pandemic.
It is a strategy employed by Chinese herbal practitioners for centuries and is a formal part of [COVID-19] treatment protocols in China, where more than 90% of COVID patients are treated with herbs.
Andrographis herb has been used as a medicinal herb in Asian medicine systems.
