Neoandrographolide

Neoandrographolide, same as Andrographolide, is a major diterpenoid isolated from Andrographis Paniculata NEES (AP). AP is an herb belonging to the Acanthaceae family, native to Asia with a long history of medicine in China and India.

Both Neoandrographolide and andrographolide are the main active ingredients of a variety of pharmaceutical preparations containing the Andrographis herb. These Andrographis drugs are mainly used for treating acute upper respiratory tract infection, bacterial dysentery, acute gastroenteritis, acute tonsillitis, pharyngitis, etc. These treatments are based on their significant anti-inflammatory effects.

Neoandrographolide can inhibit lipopolysaccharide-induced NO production in the mouse peritoneal macrophages and inhibits the release of endothelin and malondialdehyde induced by oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) in the porcine aortic endothelial cells. It also shows a protective effect in endotoxemia mice, and the mechanism may be through downregulation of TLR4 and NF-kB mRNA expression. Neoandrographolide has high potency to be an effective antibiotic drug with less side effects in the future.
