Thailand’s Cabinet has approved the use of Andrographis herb(green chiretta or Fah Talai Jone) to treat asymptomatic cases of COVID-19 in late July 2021, according to the National News Bureau of Thailand.
The healthcare system of Thai is under increasing pressure. Less than 10% of its population are fully vaccinated, the worse thing is that the daily new cases rocket to 20,000 per day, and the ICU beds run out in the hospitals. The official hopes the Andrographis remedy can relieve the press on their public health system. The official also recommends that asymptomatic patients take 60mg dose of andrographolide per serve at mealtimes, three times per day.
The herb is not yet listed on the effective Covid-19 treatment by WHO. The good news is that Thai had a series of studies on using Andrographis for the treatment of Covid-19 patients, and most of them are promising. The studies are test-tube experiments, phase 1 study, phase 2 study, and pilot study. In the phase1 study, they fixed the effective dosage of 60mg andrographolide per serve and 3times a day. The dosage makes cough volume and overall symptom severity decreasing significantly within 3 days. The PCR tests were negative for the COVID-19 virus in two patients after 5 days and were negative in all after two weeks.
The phase 2 study was disturbed by the hit of second waves, and they directly approved the pilot study with Andrographis remedy, in an emergency. Meanwhile, the pilot study is satisfied as patients receiving Andrographis paniculata in doses with andrographolide 180mg/day of 309 found that only 3 cases needed a treat, that is to say,0.97% needed treat. On the other hand, in the placebo group who did not receive andrographolide dose treatment,77 of 526 patients got worse with more severe symptoms, such as pneumonia and intubation. Besides the studies, there’s another news about the trial on prison inmates that supports the Andrographis remedy in Thailand. The trial is that 11,800 infected prison inmates with mild symptoms and 99.02% of them recovered, which showed Andrographis can prevent the virus from entering cells while reducing viral replication, The reason is that green chiretta contains andrographolide, a substance that protects cells from the virus and reduces its multiplication, said Deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek.
The official approval is made after the trial in prison, under heavy pressure from the public health care system. Green Chiretta capsule is part of the official project “Aor Wor Parod” which will distribute the survival kits containing herbal medicine and the necessary equipment to the COVID-19 patients with mild symptoms who are treated under the Home Isolation program.
Andrographolide is an active constituent in the Green Cheritta herb, the dried herb contains 0.5~1.2% andrographolide, higher content can be found in the Andrographis extracts.
